Interlude 7

Aboard NAOC

1,000 Feet Above France

One Day Ago

It took only a couple of minutes to give Captain Rose the rundown of the preceding few minutes.

Really, no one knew anything for sure. Webster had entered the galley to see if he could help with lunch, been attacked and, obviously, infected. Immediately after that, Gunnar and Fonz had come on the run and sterilized Chell.

As the Captain and Gunnar mulled over their options, Fonz was carefully looking over the scene of carnage in the small, but extremely well appointed galley.

Stopping at a cardboard box on the counter, he stared in disbelief.

“This is how it happened,” he said, holding one flap of the box open with a wooden spoon, “Captain, this is one of the boxes of food we brought on board two days ago.”

The Captain and Gunnar cautiously approached the box. Upon peering inside, Gunnar saw, right away, what Fonz meant.

For reasons which would never be known, someone had placed a severed zombie head into a box labeled Cream Filled Sandwich Cookies. Chef Dobyns and soon Webster Bass would have died simply because she wanted to give everyone Oreos with their lunch.

Gunnar shook his head at the senselessness of the loss.

“Dave? It’s Winston,” He spoke into the intercom, “What’s our current location?”

After a short pause, copilot, David Krones’ voice came back with, “We’re over central France right now, Captain.”

“Dave, I want you descend to one-thousand feet then immediately begin a controlled decompression of the cabin.”

“Captain?”

“No time for discussion, Dave. Just do it and I’ll fill you in as soon as I’m back in the cockpit.”

“Descending now.” was the copilot’s only response.

Almost immediately, Gunnar’s ears began to pop in response to the rapid drop in altitude.

Captain Rose surveyed the scene once more before looking back to Gunnar and Fonz, “Here’s what’s going to happen, gentlemen. I will not land this plane unless we have a verifiable safe landing zone or until there is absolutely no alternative. I also will not allow a potential source of infection to remain on board.

“Once we have leveled off at a thousand feet and the cabin is decompressed, you will then be able to open the main entry door.”

“You want us to throw Chell out of the plane.” Fonz said numbly. It was not a question.

“I want you to remove any source of infection from my plane, Fonz.” He stared meaningfully from Fonz to Gunnar before glancing at Web.

Gunnar followed Captain Rose’s gaze and realization of just what the Captain wanted dawned as his eyes fell upon his friend.

“Sir!” Gunnar barked, “Web’s still alive. He’s sick, but he hasn’t turned yet. I’m not throwing a living person out the door.

Winston Rose sighed heavily, “Airman, I’d never ask you to throw a living person out of my plane.”

He just let that hang in the air for the moment before turning his back on the men and heading back to the cockpit.

Gunnar, again, looked at his friend. Web was sweating profusely and shivering so violently he seemed to be vibrating.
